about the festival What began as a vision by the Petersburg Commonwealth Attorney, Cassandra Stroud-Burns, and her office has now become a marvelous reality to be shared and experienced by all of you, citizens and friends of the City of Petersburg! Petersburg has always been known for its rich history. But it is time to unveil the secret of our growing rich diversity! Many people of different cultures and heritages have moved to Petersburg within the last decade and we are continuing to grow. The time is long is long overdue for this great celebration where everyone can come and learn about the differences that make us special! About The Founder: On May 15, 1991, Cassandra Stroud-Burns was appointed the first female Commonwealth's Attorney in Petersburg to fill the unexpired term of now Judge James Hume. She has since become the senior ranking female Commonwealth's Attorney in the state and is the senior ranking African-American female District Attorney in the United States. In May 1997, she became Board Certified in the area of Criminal Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. She is the only Commonwealth's Attorney to be so certified. As the Petersburg Commonwealth Attorney, Ms. Stroud-Burns has founded several community projects such as B.E.D. (Babies Exposed to Drugs) Task Force, Buddies of Petersburg Program and Operation Diamond to name a few. These programs have addressed city-wide issues, created partnerships within the community and established groundbreaking legislature on a state level. Ms. Stroud-Burns was responsible for the drafting of the new felony child endangerment law in 1993 that is now used by prosecutors statewide. This legislature was a direct link to her program addressing the increased births of addicted newborns. These programs established by Ms. Stroud-Burns and her office are direct correlations to the residents of Petersburg and city-wide collaborations improving the community. This year, Ms. Stroud-Burns and her office will sponsor the 5th Annual Petersburg Intercultural Celebration. As the founder and organizer, this event has continued to grow and provide a city-wide festival with food, games and entertainment for all cultures. With the growth and success of the celebration, the location will be at the Poplar Lawn Park in Historic Petersburg. Free concerts and fun for everyone are on the agenda, so please come and celebrate diversity at the Petersburg Intercultural Festival July 26th and 27th! © 2008 Petersburg Intercultural Celebration
